Lights | Shades

Light is Energy

Advanced lighting systems make the most of natural sunlight during the daytime and make it easy to manage your lights, shades and other systems in tandem. Quality lighting, when integrated effectively, transforms a space and adds dimension. Lighting design plays an important role in the aesthetics of a room, the functionality of a space, energy efficiency, and personal wellbeing. At Butler Harwell, we consider the role of each luminaire in its environment, the finishing touches of each light fitting, as well as how light (or the absence of it through shade control) makes us feel throughout the day.

Lighting Design

Our lighting specialists efficiently illuminate spaces, whilst enhancing the beauty of a home. We apply various lighting techniques to bring visual interest to a room, drawing attention to architectural features or art, whilst adding a sense of luxury.

We get to know each client’s routines and how they use each room in their home to determine the most suitable light colours and temperatures for a room, source appropriate light fittings to meet the interior design brief, and integrate automated light and shade control solutions to create a stylish, comfortable and energy efficient environment.

Popular lighting solutions amongst our clients include downlighting, uplighting, wall washing, floor washing, ceiling coffers, track and linear lighting, decorative lamps, and shelving and joinery lighting. We layer different lighting methods to add atmosphere and create depth and we exclusively install high CRI lighting with high quality luminaires for enhanced richness.

Automated Lighting | Welfare

A flurry of research in the last ten years has highlighted the role that light colour temperature and light intensity play in sleep quality, productivity. and overall wellbeing. Cool, blue light in the evenings, for example has been proven detrimental to sleep quality, whilst warm light can help to relax. Achieving the optimum light temperature and brightness at different points throughout the day can improve mood, concentration, and sleep.

The technology industry has responded with human-centric lighting solutions that enable the light temperature and intensity to be tuned to mirror the circadian rhythm. Intelligent lighting can be programmed further to counteract seasonal changes, taking into consideration reduced natural daylight during winter months, often associated with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

Butler Harwell specialises in the design, installation and programming of intelligent lighting solutions that mirror the circadian rhythm, whilst still giving the homeowner control to override and modify settings at the press of a button. We ensure the correct wiring infrastructure can support tuneable light fittings that are compatible with DALI, 0-10v and DMX industry approved protocols.

Savant Daylight mode employs advanced logic to adjust intensity and colour temperature to support a healthy sleep and wake cycle.

Energy Efficiency | Shade Control

An integral factor in lighting control is shade control. Intelligent shade solutions adjust to the changing quality of natural sunlight entering a room, lighting and even heating your home more efficiently. When there’s bright sunshine, there’s less need for artificial light and heating. Butler Harwell not only installs the most suitable and sustainable light and shade solutions for each unique home, we programme them to communicate with the HVAC systems for maximum efficiency and sustainability. When integrated with home automation, shades can be programmed to reflect the body clock, allowing natural light in when it’s time to wake, and shutting light out when it’s time to sleep. If improved sleep is important to you, consider blackout blinds to eradicate ‘light pollution’.

Lutron’s sheer roller blinds allow sunlight to filter into a room, while preserving the outside view.

Automated Lighting | Security

With automated programming you can set timers to turn all lights off at your chosen time, and allow sensors to take control in the meantime. Integrating sensors with automated lighting systems is an effective intruder deterrent. Indoor and outdoor lights can automatically switch on and, if integrated with a security system, alerts can be sent to the occupant’s device.

For everyday safety and convenience, movement detecting sensors can trigger indoor lights to guide night-time visits to the bathroom or kitchen, whilst selected lights can be set to turn on at the end of daylight hours to avoid returning home in complete darkness.

Timers can even create the illusion of occupancy whilst away for enhanced security. We install home automation systems that enable lights and other appliances to be programmed to switch on and off throughout the day to create the illusion of an occupied home whilst the homeowner is away.

Create a ‘Mockupancy’ illusion to protect your home.
